Our entire team at Michael’s On East is dedicated to supporting local nonprofits,” said Ms. Klauber. “This new program allows use to contribute to many tremendous causes in our community through the Designing Daughters grant program.”         “We often say Designing Daughters is ‘Where Fashionistas Meet Philanthropy’,” said Jane Thompson, President of Designing Daughters, “With the support of Michael’s guests and the restaurant’s contributions this summer, our Fashionistas can pair fabulous cuisine and fine wines with philanthropy!”   Guests are encouraged to enjoy a small plate or a multi-course dinner as they celebrate with friends and family at the Michael’s On East Lounge. The bar is open beginning at 5 p.m., Monday – Saturday. In addition to new mini-martini flights, handcrafted mixology libations and vintage cocktails, the Lounge features several popular existing promotions.   Each Monday, Michael’s On East / Michael’s Wine Cellar Facebook fans enjoy a special opportunity to claim a free treat during happy hour in the bar. All are invited to visit the Facebook page each Monday to learn a unique "secret word of the day," then simply provide the word to Michael’s mixologists every Monday, 5-7 p.m., to receive a featured delicious small plate appetizer or free drink. A recently unveiled Lounge menu offers six new lounge bites, eight craft beers and ten innovation cocktails in addition to long-time favorites from the popular bar. Epicurean Adventure to New Orleans Pays Tribute to Arnaud’s During Savor Sarasota

Each month, Michael’s On East offers a new Epicurean Adventure to a select culinary destination, but this June Michael’s guests will enjoy an extra special menu to savor. The June 2012 Epicurean Adventure menu will salute a New Orleans classic restaurant located in the heart of the French Quarter: Arnaud’s. A three-course dinner featuring original Arnaud’s specialties will be available for $25 per person as well as a two-course lunch for $15 per person, in conjunction with Savor Sarasota presented by Visit Sarasota County. Michael’s On East will offer selected wines paired with the specialty menu in June; Wilson Daniels, Chardonnay, 2010 and Villa San Juliette, Petite Syrah, 2010 will be featured for $10 per pairing during dinner and $5 per pairing during lunch. It was in New Orleans where Michael’s On East Founder and Co-Proprietor Michael Klauber gained his original love for food with bold flavor. Following studies at Cornell University, Klauber began a management training program at the famed Royal Sonesta Hotel New Orleans where he worked directly with hotel General Manager Archie Casbarian. In 1978, Casbarian purchased the historic Arnaud’s site and began restoration of the property, inviting Klauber to join him in transition and re-opening of the restaurant. Klauber worked with the Casbarian family from 1977 to 1980. Many members of the Klauber family, a name now synonymous with hospitality in Sarasota, have also worked with the Casbarians in New Orleans. Tommy Klauber worked at the Royal Sonesta from 1976 to 1978 on the culinary team. Katie Klauber Moulton completed a college internship with the marketing and food & beverage departments at the Royal Sonesta in the summer of 1975. Subsequently, while working for a hotel and restaurant design and consulting firm in the summer of 1978, she drafted plans for the Arnaud’s renovation. Along with all three of his children, Dr. Murray “Murf” Klauber maintains a close friendship with the Casbarian family. Michael’s On East current General Manager Jeffrey Hymel got his start at Arnaud’s as well. Michael Klauber returned to Sarasota in 1980 to take the helm of food and beverage operations at his family’s historic property on Longboat Key, The Colony Beach & Tennis Resort. He opened Michael’s On East in 1987. “Having recently celebrated 25 years, it’s a nostalgic time to reflect and celebrate our history, and New Orleans is certainly an influential part of my history,” said Klauber. “Count Arnaud (Cazenave) believed that ‘the pursuit of the pleasures of the table is as worthy as anything else one chooses to pursue in life,’ and I take great pride in serving our community and our guests. What I learned from my mentor Archie Casbarian is the philosophy of running the business from the guest’s point of view. A philosophy we continue to live by today at Michael’s On East.” Presently, Arnaud’s Restaurant is being operated by a fourth generation of owners, Katy and Archie Casbarian, Jr. along with their mother Jane.  Just as the Casbarian family continues an instrumental legacy at Arnaud’s, Michael’s daughters Kelly Klauber and Molly Klauber are active members of the Michael’s On East team today. Michael’s On East Executive Chef Jamil Pineda worked directly with Arnaud’s Chef de Cuisine Tommy DiGiovanni in preparation for the special menu. Michael’s Epicurean Adventures present culinary journeys to a new destination each month. The Epicurean Adventure to New Orleans dinner menu will be available Monday through Saturday, June 1 – 31, 2012. The two-course lunch offering is available Monday through Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information or to make restaurant reservations, please call 941-366-0007, ext. 224 or visit www.bestfood.com. Drawing for New Orleans Getaway Announced In conjunction with the featured Arnaud’s-inspired menu, Michael’s On East guests will have the opportunity to win a trip for two to New Orleans. The luxurious weekend getaway will include roundtrip airfare, a magnificent dinner at the famed Arnaud’s restaurant, a two-night stay at the Royal Sonesta Hotel New Orleans on world-famous Bourbon Street and dinner at the hotel’s new Restaurant R’evolution opening this June. Restaurant R’evolution is the first joint venture of award-winning chefs John Folse and Rick Tramonto, offering modern, imaginative reinterpretations of classic Cajun and Creole cuisine. All guests who dine at Michael’s On East in June will be invited to complete an entry form during his or her visit in the dining room or lounge. No purchase is necessary to enter. A single winner will be randomly selected on July 2, 2012. Seventy years later, in 1978, Arnaud’s was acquired by Archie and Jane Casbarian, the second family of proprietors the restaurant has ever known.  Casbarian sought to return Arnaud’s to the roots from which it had strayed by both restoring the property and reinvigorating the cuisine. In so doing, Casbarian brought world renown and widespread acclaim to Arnaud’s. Located steps off of Bourbon Street in the heart of the French Quarter, Arnaud’s offers classic Creole Cuisine and exemplary service in beautifully restored turn of the century dining rooms. You Made Everything Easy

Hi, Ngoc, Our luncheon was perfect!  After months of planning, gathering together people to help execute the plan, and seeing it all come together was a beautiful thing!  You made everything easy in the planning stage, and your lovely staff made the execution flawless.  Douglas welcomed us and guided me through the set-up, making the process uncomplicated.  He gave a stamp of approval on the centerpieces, agreed with me that the cream napkins rather than the red ones that we had looked at were just fine, opened doors, and even reminded me to leave my purse inside while I schlepped stuff.  He was definitely part of “the team.”  And, beautiful Evelyn provided a soothing note, making sure that I got iced tea from the bar initially, and refilling my glass.  The other two waiters whose names I did not get (so sorry) were professional, helpful, and fun.  Before the crowd arrived I took a picture of them behind the bar which I will send to you to give to them.  We agreed that it reflected their personalities. What can I say about the food except that one woman at my table said, “This is the best lunch we’ve ever had.”  We meet monthly at clubs in the area, and she is a long-time member who is not one to toss out too many positive comments.  Everyone at my table had the crab cakes…amazing!  From all sides I heard, “That’s  a lot of lump crab meat!”  The salad ladies seemed equally happy.  Then there was the dessert.  Oh, my.  Fortunately, it came as the harpsichordist began to  play and stayed on the table throughout the drawing of prizes so people could continue to take small bites until their plates were clean.  I went to the gym when I got home and rode my bike around the neighborhood. I can’t think of anything that I would change.  Thank you for providing the venue, help with planning, and a delicious lunch.  Our treasurer is eager to close out her books, so I would appreciate your sending me the bill as soon as possible.  We have the “changing of the guard” on Wednesday, so she and I would like to receive it by then.  You can email it to me, and I will forward to her. Thanks again, Ngoc and the entire Michael’s team, for making Encore’s end of year luncheon so special.  We look forward to working with you in the future.   My best, Becky Rives

Everything Went Perfectly

Hi Phil, I just want to let you know that everything went perfectly at our Seder Friday night.  Tracy and her crew could not be better.    They assured that our congregants and their guests had a wonderful Seder. Tracy and her crew were efficient and professional from setup, through service and cleanup.  They were always available to meet every request.  The chicken drew compliments -- moist and well seasoned.  The flourless chocolate cake was as good as everyone remembered.  And not a single complaint. Thank you for a successful event. Ron Benice, Temple Sinai Seder

Nothing is a challenge for your staff! They are always so friendly and willing to help. You are fortunate to have people like Tracy and her team representing you....it is perfection...Plus....it is joyful! We always have such a good time with your crew. - Barbara Simon, Sarasota Orchestra

Top Notch & Comforting

Phil, I wanted to make sure that I connected with you post-birthday bash on March 10th. The party was better than we could have imagined. Your staff, presentation and employee attitude was top notch and comforting. Thanks so very much for making this the kind of day that my mother is still talking about. It was so important to us to get everything right for her. All of the guests were also struck by the mood, feeling and appearance of the party- how well everything went and how attractively everything was done and presented. Just wanted to make sure you knew how I feel and how appreciative I am for all of your efforts on my mother's behalf. Best, (Daughter of the Birthday Girl)

Exceeded All Expectations

From the beginning till the end you exceeded all expectations we had for Melissa's wedding reception.  The menu choices, linens, family style table set up etc. and  your guidance and choices were so perfect for the occasion.  Staff members from your office, the Wine Cellar, and the crew that prepared and served the reception food were all generous, professional, helpful and delightful to deal with.  Thank you so much for going to Chelsea and overseeing the setup. You made our celebration an event we truly enjoyed without worry!  Your patience with me all along the way helped me to enjoy a sometimes stressful project.  We have had so many compliments on the dinner from our family and friends...And of course Melissa and Ben were so pleased. Again, Thank you so much (Mother of the Bride)

Michael’s On East A Sarasota Staple

A night at Michael’s On East is a must when in Sarasota. One of only ten restaurants in America inducted into the Fine Dining Hall of Fame, the restaurant exceeds expectations with consistently fresh and versatile dishes that have kept folks coming back for a quarter century. With a collection of 1,000 wines exclusively from handpicked domaineestates and an “Epicurean Adventure” menu highlighting exotic fare from destinations such as South Africa and Spain, Michael’s On East is a sophisticated supper club with an emphasis on old-fashioned service, fabulous wine, and unforgettable food.  Their secret is simple: Michael. In the restaurant business for more than four decades, Michael Klauber has made his  passion for wine and his dedication to freshness and superb fare into a labor of love, pleasing patrons for more than 25 years. He visits every table, every night, and keeps his love of freshness and variety alive at Michael’s On East. Favorite dishes, which will never come off the menu, include any of the aged steaks from Allen Brothers in Chicago, the broiled veal chop, and the signature bow-tie pasta. Not into a sit-down dinner? Then just pull up a chair to the piano bar for a cocktail or ask for the special table (called “the dirty thirty”), which gives guests a backstage pass for making musical requests. It all adds up to an evening of fun times and fine cuisine. Fly directly into Sarasota Bradenton International Airport or make your way over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge from Tampa International Airport. Michael’s On East is located at 1212 East Ave. South, Sarasota, FL 34239. For reservations and information, call 941.366.0007 or visit bestfood.com. Click here to download PDF.

Professionalism

My guests gave many compliments on the food and the servers were wonderful. Everything they set up looked beautiful, and they did their job in such a professional manner that I barely knew they were in my kitchen! S.B.

Popular Reception Spot

Known as much for its award-winning cuisine as its grand ballroom, Michael's is one of Sarasota's most popular reception spots. Guests can linger in the adjoining tropical courtyard or stroll down for martinis at the East Side piano bar. Most of the staff has been here for years, and the service shows it.

Sarasota Restaurants Create Recipe for Success

The team behind Michael’s On East has been making news lately — becoming local celebrities, really. However, behind the great success of the staple fine-dining spot, a bigger success is brewing. Sarasota is on the map and not only for its beautiful beaches this time. Sarasota’s tasty talent is finally being discovered. By staying on top of technology and trends, Michael’s On East has stayed fresh and in front of consumers for more than 22 years. Word-of-mouth reviews from its loyal customers haven’t hurt, either. But continued local attention burst into national attention, when Michael’s On East was named one of only 10 restaurants in Nation’s Restaurant News 2009 Fine Dining Hall of Fame. The inductees, among them big names in New York, Chicago and San Francisco, will be highlighted in the July 20 issue of Nation’s Restaurant News. Michael’s On East adds that award it to its ever-growing collection, including honors such as the AAA Four Diamond Award every year since 1992, being recognized by the Zagat Survey as the “most popular restaurant on Florida’s Gulf Coast” and consecutively named as one of Florida’s top 20 restaurants by “Florida Trend” magazine for the past 18 years. Even after decades of awards, it seems co-proprietors Michael Klauber and Phil Mancini are just hitting their prime. “Quality recognition for our restaurant scene can only encourage more budding restaurateurs to join our ranks here,” Klauber says. “To be honored by our national restaurant peers is truly a great accomplishment, but it is the pride in the eyes of every one of our staff that is the best reward.” Editor-in-chief of Nation’s Restaurant News, Ellen Koteff, said that Sarasota is no longer a place known only for “early-bird specials,” but it’s an up-and-coming restaurant destination. With a number of Sarasota, Longboat Key and other area restaurants continuously named “Florida Trend” Golden Spoon winners, it appears Sarasota’s focus on food is on the upswing. Restaurants and chefs aren’t the only ones noticing this change. According to research provided by Sarasota & Her Islands Convention and Visitors Bureau, Sarasota County is home to the highest concentration of Zagat-rated restaurants in Florida. In spring 2009, 90.2% of visitors listed “dining out” as an activity they enjoyed while in the area — which ranks higher than the 85% who answered “the beach.” “We are poised to become a restaurant destination,” Klauber says. “The diversity in restaurant cuisine and ambience has grown dramatically over the past few years in Sarasota. This honor will bring new attention to our local culinary scene, which I believe truly rivals that of some of the bigger well-known markets.” Derek’s Culinary Casual Restaurant’s executive chef, Derek Barnes, agrees. “Sarasota is most definitely poised to become a restaurant destination,” Barnes says. “I have lived here for seven years and have watched a wealth of great, innovative restaurants surface in my short time. We already have a large number of highly-rated Zagat guide restaurants and a good amount of Golden Spoon award recipients.” Barnes, who has garnered national attention as a 2009 James Beard Foundation semi-finalist for best chef in the South, credits Sarasota Convention & Visitors Bureau’s “Savor Sarasota” restaurant week with helping to reinforce the quality restaurants in our area. Other Golden Spoon award-winning local chefs and restaurant owners are noticing a few more trends in our local culinary world: more international clientele, as well as internationally experienced chefs (such as The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota’s chef, Chris Southwick), a wide variety of fresh, local products, seafood and produce, and most importantly, local supporters. “The key is a core of chefs who care about producing excellent products who have stayed and not left for a big city,” says Selva Grill’s Darwin Santa Maria. “In all food articles you must now talk about Sarasota chefs and the support of local customers.” “I think Sarasota is headed in the right direction with trying to establish a more distinct culinary culture,” says Katie Moulton, president and general manager of The Colony Beach & Tennis Resort. “With the continuation of the ‘Savor Sarasota’ campaign, it provides further reinforcement, particularly to our local residents, that they live in an area rich with dining choices. Also, supporting the local, independent restaurants is extremely important if we want to establish the area as a culinary destination.” best of the best Nation’s Restaurant News” 2009 Fine Dining Hall of Fame honorees: • Barolo Grill, in Denver • Blue Ginger, in Boston • Bouley, in New York City • Herbsaint, in New Orleans • Naha, in Chicago • Nana Restaurant, in Dallas • Michael Mina, in Las Vegas • Michael’s On East, in Sarasota • New Rivers, in Providence, R.I. • Slanted Door, in San Francisco IF YOU GO Michael’s On East 1212 East Ave. South 366-0007 www.michaelsoneast.com

Michael's On East Inducted Into Fine Dining Hall Of Fame By Nation's Restaurant News

Michael's On East has been named, along with top restaurants in New York City, Chicago and San Francisco, to Nation's Restaurant News magazine's 2009 Fine Dining Hall of Fame. Sarasota resident Burton Sack, a former chairman of the National Restaurant Association, said inclusion in the magazine's hall of fame is a very big deal. "To be selected by the industry's leading publication for inclusion in their Dining Hall of Fame is a high honor," he said. "Those of us that live here should be justifiably honored to have one of our own restaurants selected as one of only 10 restaurants in the entire United States to be selected for inclusion this year." Michael's On East and the other fine-dining restaurants were selected by the magazine's editors based on criteria including excellence in food quality, gracious and professional service and memorable ambiance. "This is the biggest thing in our whole industry, and I've been hoping for this for 10 years," Michael Klauber, who co-owns the restaurant with Philip Mancini, said Thursday. "It's like the Oscars in our industry." Klauber said the staff "was walking on air" because normally the honor goes to well-known restaurants in big cities. "It will help Sarasota get recognized for the awesome restaurants we have here," he said. "We're very excited." Klauber and Mancini have operated Michael's on East for 23 years, and it has hosted the monthly Tiger Bay Club meeting for at least two decades. The hall of fame designation is the latest in a string of awards won by the restaurant. Michael's on East was named by Florida Trend magazine as one of "Florida's Top 20" restaurants from 1992 to 2006. The Zagat Survey named Michael's On East as the "most popular restaurant on Florida's Gulf Coast" in 1996, 1999 and 2001 and the restaurant has received AAA's "Four Diamond Award" every year since 1992. Just during the last month, Michael's on East was host to United Cerebral Palsy's annual Fabulous Foxes and Hot Mamas event and the Sarasota Pride Festival and fed Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink during the Sarasota County Civic League's annual banquet. "It is not so much an honor for Phil and I as it is for our staff," Klauber said. "They are the ones who made this happen."
