Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Sarasota FL 34236 | 941-265-8194

Open Daily 11am - 3pm

“The Green Orchid” pays homage to the “green” components of this building as well as to Marie Selby Botanical Gardens’ researchers who have been studying orchids – including the very rare green orchid, since Selby Gardens’ founding in 1973. The Green Orchid is set to be the world’s first net positive energy restaurant in the world! A nearly 50,000 square-foot solar array will generate enough electricity to not only power this restaurant, but all buildings on this side of the Palm Avenue Promenade.

When you explore the delicious options in this menu, be on the lookout for dishes or drinks that contain produce from Selby Gardens’ rooftop organic garden overhead. The garden is planted and maintained for Selby Gardens by Operation EcoVets, a non-profit organization that provides personal, educational, and professional growth opportunities for military veterans.

The Green Orchid features a wine list offering international selections that use organic, biodynamic or sustainable practices, and many wineries powered by solar renewable energy.

The World's first net-positive energy restaurant

The Green Orchid by Michael’s On East, is located within Marie Selby Botanical Gardens’ Downtown Sarasota campus, and is operated by renowned Sarasota restaurateurs Michael Klauber and Philip Mancini. This groundbreaking establishment marks a significant milestone as it operates entirely on solar power and is set to become the world’s first net-positive energy restaurant, generating more energy than it consumes. The restaurant features a garden-to-table menu, featuring the state-of-the-art Drs. Andrew and Judith Economos Rooftop Edible Garden that supplies fresh, seasonal produce for its inspired menu. Notably, the rooftop garden's planning, planting, and maintenance are undertaken by Operation EcoVets, a non-profit organization dedicated to offering personal, educational, and professional growth opportunities for military veterans.

Restaurant Design

With the restaurant being fully solar-powered, The Green Orchid features an all-electric and induction kitchen that was designed by the world-renowned designer Jimi Yui of YuiDesign, Inc. His clients include Thomas Keller, Daniel Boulud, Joël Robuchon, Eric Ripert, Nobu Matsuhisa and many more around the globe. No gas or flame will be used in any part of the kitchen.

Selby Gardens Proceeds

A significant percentage of the proceeds of The Green Orchid benefit Selby Gardens' core mission of providing bayfront sanctuaries connecting people to air plants of the world, native nature, and regional history. The restaurant is operated by Michael’s On East, a celebrated restaurant founded in 1987, which offers award-winning cuisine, innovative cocktails, world-class wines, and excellent service.

Menu Inspiration

The Green Orchid's menu is based around garden-to-table offerings with focusing on local, regional & sustainably sourced produce, seafood, meats, and poultry options. The menu changes seasonally, highlighting the freshest ingredients from local farms and the restaurant's rooftop garden. There are vegetarian and vegan options available to cater to various dietary preferences.

Beverage Program
The stylish bar program at The Green Orchid will feature specialty cocktails and a wine list that offers international selections that use organic, vegan, and dry-farming alongside those cultivated through biodynamic practices and powered by solar renewable energy.
